Senator Christopher “Bong” Go reaffirmed his support for local legislators at the Philippine Councilors League (PCL) Caraga Region End-Term Assembly held at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City on 28 February.

Speaking through his Malasakit Team, Go thanked the councilors, led by PCL Regional Chairman John Paul Pimentel, for their dedication to serving their communities. He acknowledged their critical role in bridging national and local governance, ensuring that essential services reach the people.

"You are the first people our fellow citizens turn to when they need help. You are their voice in the local government, playing a crucial role in crafting laws and programs that truly benefit them," Go said.

The senator emphasized his commitment to working alongside local leaders, stressing that his office remains open to supporting policies that strengthen local governance.

"Like you, I am also a public servant. We share the same goal of bringing the government closer to the people, especially those in need," he added.

Go assured the councilors that if re-elected, he would continue advocating for their welfare, pushing for policies that enhance local governance and securing more resources to support their work.

Healthcare and salary reforms

As Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, Go has championed programs that directly benefit local government officials and their constituents. His Malasakit Centers, established under Republic Act No. 11463, provide medical assistance to indigent patients. In the Caraga Region alone, seven Malasakit Centers have already served thousands of Filipinos, with a total of 167 centers nationwide aiding over 17 million people.

Go has also supported the establishment of 44 Super Health Centers across Caraga to improve healthcare accessibility and ease congestion in major hospitals.

Additionally, he co-authored RA 11466, or the Salary Standardization Law (SSL) 5, which adjusted government workers’ wages, including those of councilors. To further improve compensation, he filed Senate Bill No. 2504, which proposes SSL 6 to provide better salaries for government employees.

Good local governance

Go reiterated that strong local governance is key to national progress and assured continued support for councilors in their legislative and public service efforts.

"I will continue to support you because I believe that an effective and well-functioning local government is the foundation of a more progressive nation," he said.

He also reminded the councilors that their role extends beyond crafting ordinances.

"Being a councilor is not just about passing ordinances, but about being a true public servant to your constituents. You are the hope of our country in building a stronger local government," he emphasized.

As he concluded his message, Go urged the councilors to remain dedicated to their communities and to always prioritize public welfare.

"Remember, we only pass through this world once. Whatever good or help we can do for others, let us do it now because we will not get another chance to do so," he said.
