The Philippines and Canada have just concluded negotiations on the Status of Visiting Forces Agreement (SoVFA), the Department of National Defense (DND) said on Friday.

In a statement, the DND said this followed a series of virtual meetings and inter-agency consultations.

The conclusion of negotiations on the SoVFA came after the Philippines and Canada marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2024, as the two nations “reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their bilateral ties through the SoVFA.”

The visiting forces agreement establishes a framework for increased cooperation; closer collaboration between the respective defense and military establishments; improved interoperability between forces, and more joint exercises and capacity-building activities.

“This development underscores the Philippines’ commitment to bolstering international partnerships and promoting regional security, thereby ensuring the security and economic prosperity of both countries,” the DND said.

The Philippines anticipates the positive impact of the SoVFA in contributing to peace, stability, and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

The DND vowed to remain “committed to working closely with international partners to safeguard the national interest and strengthen security in the region.”

DND Undersecretary Angelito de Leon and Canada’s National Defence Assistant Deputy Minister Scott Millar led their respective delegations in the discussions.
