LONDON (AFP) — At least 20 seafarers and port workers have been killed in 68 incidents involving commercial vessels around the Strait of Hormuz during six months of war between Iran and the United States and Israel, the International Maritime Organization said Tuesday.

The UN maritime agency said 35 others were wounded and one remained missing in incidents recorded in the Gulf and nearby waters, averaging one every 2.6 days.

About half of the incidents involved tankers, while 20 percent involved container ships and 15 percent bulk carriers. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations classified 47 incidents as attacks.

Liberia-flagged vessels were involved in 13 incidents, followed by vessels from Panama and the Marshall Islands with 10 each. Four incidents involved Iran-flagged vessels.

The frequency of incidents varied as the war and peace talks progressed.

From the outbreak of war in late February until a framework for peace talks was reached in mid-June, an incident occurred every 2.3 days on average. The period accounted for 16 deaths and 19 injuries.

The rate fell to one incident every 4.6 days as peace talks continued through about 7 July. No deaths, injuries or disappearances were reported during that period.
