Bataan 1st District Rep. Geraldine Roman addressed the media on Monday, discussing several key issues related to women’s rights and legislative reforms.
In line with the commemoration of Women’s Month this March, Roman took issue with the Family Code, specifically pointing out that 11 articles allegedly “prioritize the husband.”
“There is something intrinsically unfair about these 11 articles in the Family Code. For the longest time, we in the Committee on Women and Gender Equality in the House of Representatives have unanimously pushed for this change,” she said.
The representative said that the House Tri Committee is currently gathering ideas from relevant stakeholders to empower women.
“This is the only way to come up with a legislative measure that will respect, first, our constitutional right to freedom of expression, and second, promote self-regulation and establish rules,” she said.
Roman also touched on the Divorce Bill, which she referred to as a pro-women piece of legislation.
“Divorce is a pro-women piece of legislation. It is no secret that many women, despite their best efforts, face failed marriages that have turned toxic,” Roman stated.
Despite the bill’s progress in the House of Representatives, Roman expressed that she was not surprised by the delay it faced in the Senate.
