Petro Gazz proved too strong for Capital1 as it pulled off a 25-19, 25-23, 25-21 victory in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference qualifying round on Saturday at the Philsports Arena.
With the win, the No. 2-seeded Angels secured their spot in the quarterfinals, joining Creamline and Galeries Tower, while the No. 11-seeded Solar Spikers will have to battle for a quarterfinal berth through the play-in tournament.
Petro Gazz found an early spark from Brooke Van Sickle, who ignited a late rally in the first set with four consecutive points to put the Angels ahead.
In the second set, veteran hitter Myla Pablo stepped up, leading a comeback to erase Capital1’s early lead before sealing a tight 25-23 win.
The Angels carried their momentum into the third set, with Van Sickle and Pablo unleashing powerful attacks and setter Djanel Cheng orchestrating the offense to close out the match.
“It was a great effort from the team,” Van Sickle said.
“I thought Capital1 did a fantastic job, and they came in fighting today.”
Pablo delivered a team-high 17 points, built on 15 attacks, one block, and one ace, while Van Sickle led all scorers with 19 points, including 15 attacks, two blocks, and one ace. MJ Phillips also provided solid contributions with 12 points.
Reflecting on the match, Pablo credited her teammates and the coaching staff for their trust and support.
“Well, of course, for my team and the management, I really need to play as part of the team.”
“I know I’ve been through a lot this conference, but I told myself that I can do this and that I’ll bring back the player I am today.”
“Kudos to Capital1 as well — their heart and effort were incredible,” Pablo said, praising Capital1’s resilience.
Leila Cruz led the Solar Spikers with 16 points from 15 attacks and one block, while Jorelle Singh chipped in 10 points, all from attacks.
Despite the loss, Capital1 remains in the hunt for a quarterfinal berth as they prepare for the play-in tournament.
With their quarterfinal ticket secured, Petro Gazz now shifts its focus to the next stage, aiming to push deeper into the tournament.
