President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is eyeing the transformation of the semiconductor industry from fabricating chips to designing integrated circuits.
This came as he met with Amkor Technology Inc. chief operating officer (COO) Kevin Engel at Malacañang Palace on Tuesday.
In the meeting, Marcos highlighted the company’s role in expanding the industry.
“Your continued involvement in the Philippines is something that certainly we would like to encourage as we are trying to move our semiconductor industry up the value chain from pure fabrication to design,” he said.
Amkor Technology Inc. is known for manufacturing semiconductor devices and lead types and provides various services, including back grinding, wafer mapping, assembly and strip testing.
Furthermore, Amkor said it plans to increase its capacity in the Philippines and join other renowned semiconductors and electronics companies such as Panasonic Murata, Sumitomo Electric, Samsung, Brother, Canon, Toshiba and Epson.
