Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea (WPS), Commodore Jay Tarriela, urged Filipino voters to evaluate candidates based on their stance on territorial disputes, particularly in the West Philippine Sea.
He emphasized the need to elect officials who prioritize the country’s sovereignty and do not support pro-China positions.
Tarriela warned that electing such individuals could undermine the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) modernization efforts, as lawmakers might block necessary funding for the defense of the WPS.
While not endorsing any specific candidates, Tarriela called for support for those who genuinely defend Philippine sovereignty. He stressed that the issue goes beyond politics and concerns all Filipinos, urging voters to assess candidates based on their track record on the WPS.
He pointed out that some politicians may use the issue for attention but have shown little support for the Philippines, instead siding with China and downplaying the significance of the territorial dispute.
Tarriela noted that Filipinos are now more aware of the West Philippine Sea situation and the government’s efforts to protect the area. He also criticized past promises, such as using a jet-ski to challenge China, stating that such gestures were not realistic and no longer deceive the public. He urged voters to focus on candidates’ actual positions and commitments.
