The University of Santo Tomas (UST) recently participated in an enriching international exchange program titled “Enhancing the Attractiveness of Niigata Prefecture through Human Resource Development in Health, Medical Care, and Welfare.” This program, supported by the Niigata Prefecture International Exchange Promotion Fund, brought together students and faculty from Southeast Asia to explore Japan’s healthcare systems and cultural heritage.
The participants were composed of fourth year students from the College of Rehabilitation Science namely Theodore Franxynne Limson, Angelica Phoebe Rane Mendinueto, and Leila Marie Burgos. They were also accompanied by academic staff Mark Angel Serra, MOH, PTRP.
The program featured a blend of academic lectures, cultural experiences, and practical field trips. Participants attended lectures on Japan’s medical insurance and long-term care systems, rehabilitation and nutrition, and the use of new technologies for movement analysis. Visits to the Niigata Rehabilitation Hospital and nursing care facility were also done. This allowed participants to observe Japan’s healthcare delivery in action. In addition to these experiences, the program included Japanese language lessons, calligraphy workshops, and visits to cultural landmarks like Shibata Castle and Yahiko Shrine. These activities offered participants a deeper appreciation of Japanese culture and traditions.
