UP Diliman suspends classes on EDSA day

The University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman will suspend classes on 25 February 2025, to commemorate the anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, according to a memorandum issued by UP Chancellor Edgardo Carlo Vistan II.

The suspension will apply to all undergraduate and graduate classes, regardless of the mode of instruction, including face-to-face, synchronous, asynchronous, and other teaching/learning formats.

“Administrators, faculty, Research Extension and Professional Staff, and administrative staff who wish to take part in activities may, if necessary, request a special work arrangement from their supervisor or department chair,” the memorandum said.

Unit heads are encouraged to allow personnel, including contractual employees, to participate in commemoration activities and accommodate requests for special work arrangements.  

The UP Integrated School (UPIS) may proceed with its planned UPIS fair activities on 25 February.

The decision follows an administrative order issued 19 February by UP President Angelo Jimenez to the entire UP system, encouraging participation in “meaningful and peaceful activities that honor the spirit of unity, freedom, and civil liberties.”  

Jimenez’s order designated 25 February as an Alternative Learning Day within the university system. However, it also granted chancellors the authority to “determine suitable work and class arrangements for their respective campuses to support the commemoration of EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary.”

UP Cebu had previously announced the suspension of classes and work on 25 February, describing it as “a day of commemoration, remembrance and reflection,” according to Tug-ani, the university’s official student publication.  

The EDSA People Power Revolution anniversary, which falls on a Tuesday in 2025, has been declared a special working day.
