Recently, I officiated at the swearing-in of the new Board of Trustees of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines Friends Foundation Inc., and a wave of nostalgia washed over me.
Memories of my own Girl Scout days came flooding back, reminding me of the role this organization has played in shaping who I am today. The values I was taught — kindness, empathy and teamwork — are now cornerstones of my life.
I said to myself how essential organizations like the Girl Scouts are to young girls today, who must navigate a landscape that is often littered with difficult, and many times dangerous, challenges.
In our country, one such challenge is the distressing issue of teenage pregnancy. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), 150,138 babies were born to adolescent mothers in 2022. This is equivalent to 411 babies born every day to women below 20 years of age.
This alarming statistic reflects poor reproductive health education, societal stigma, and a lack of resources to empower young individuals with knowledge of their own bodies.
Organizations like the GSP fortunately have stepped in, providing valuable information about reproductive health and rights. Their workshops educate and create safe spaces for open dialogue, building a generation equipped to make informed decisions.
Another troubling issue faced by young girls today is violence against women and girls.
Gender-based violence has surged as it remains deeply ingrained in socio-economic hardships and cultural norms that often silence victims.
Again the GSP has stepped in, arming young girls with knowledge about what they can do and teaching them self-defense strategies, instilling in them a sense of confidence and purpose. The young women are also encouraged to form communities that stand united against violence, fostering an environment where they can rely on one another for strength.
Perhaps one of the most significant contributions of the GSP is its focus on leadership development among girls. Their various civic activities and community service projects nurture a sense of urgency that is crucial in a society where girls frequently feel sidelined.
The skills they cultivate in these programs not only prepare them to tackle personal challenges but also empower them to become advocates for change in their communities. Thus, these future leaders not only become active participants in society, but changemakers themselves.
The relationships formed within the GSP also underscore the importance of mutual support during the formative years. The bonds of friendship among the members form a vital network that enables sharing experiences, fostering resilience and compassion. This helps girls navigate the tumultuous waters of youth, allowing them to confront societal pressures with the collective strength of their peers.
As we face the intricacies of modern life, the role of organizations like the Girl Scouts of the Philippines cannot be overstated. They serve both as a protective shield against societal pressures and provide beacons of transformative hope, guiding our girls towards a future filled with potential.
Promoting the empowerment of young women is not merely an act of kindness; it is part of our shared responsibility to build a world where every girl feels valued, secure, and able to pursue her dreams. By supporting remarkable organizations like the GSP, we invest in a brighter future for us all.
