Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc has assured the public that the security situation remains under control following a minor encounter between Philippine Army troops and New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Barangay Poblacion, Nueva Era, on 6 February 2025.

In a video posted on his official Facebook page on Thursday night, Governor Manotoc addressed residents regarding the incident.

“Totoo nga po, there is a minor insurgency encounter this morning at 9 AM,” he said.

According to sources, troops from the 50th Infantry (Defender) Battalion, 5th Infantry (Star) Division were on a routine patrol when armed rebels opened fire. No injuries or casualties were reported on either side.

A source, who requested anonymity due to a lack of authorization to speak officially, stated that food supplies and rice packs were found at the site of the incident, suggesting that the rebels were securing provisions. With government forces actively conducting patrols and security operations, insurgents in the area are now running low on supplies, making it increasingly difficult for them to sustain their presence.

Governor Manotoc also noted that the insurgents came from Abra and crossed into Ilocos Norte, prompting additional security measures. In response, the Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office (INPPO) deployed troops to secure the area and act as a blocking force to prevent further movement by the rebels.

Military officials emphasized that the province’s security remains stable, and authorities continue to closely monitor the situation to ensure the safety of local communities. Given the current circumstances, officials are encouraging rebels to lay down their arms, reintegrate into society, and take advantage of government programs designed to provide livelihood and development opportunities for those who choose to surrender.
