The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) successfully rescued a 50-year-old man who fell overboard at Lucena Port, Quezon, on Sunday.
According to reports, the incident occurred as the passenger vessel MV Virgen De Peñafrancia XII was preparing to dock. The man, a resident of Poblacion, Milagros, Masbate, was traveling with his niece from Bapor, Masbate, when he unexpectedly jumped into the water from the vessel’s starboard ramp.
Upon receiving the alert from Starhorse Shipping Lines' duty operations officer, the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Lucena Search and Rescue (SAR) Team, in coordination with the Southern Tagalog Sea Marshal Unit, quickly launched a rescue mission. The team successfully retrieved the man and brought him safely to shore, where he was immediately assessed medically.
His niece later disclosed that he had a pre-existing mental or psychological condition, which may have contributed to the incident. After the rescue, the man’s son arrived at the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Port Police station to take custody of him. He was then transported by Bureau of Fire Protection Emergency Medical Services (BFP-EMS) personnel to Quezon Medical Center for further evaluation.
