Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga has underscored the critical role of Estero and River Rangers in protecting the country’s waterways.
Speaking before 2,600 such rangers from the National Capital Region (NCR), Region III, and Region IV-A at the “DEAR (Dedication, Empowerment, Appreciation, and Recognition) Estero and River Rangers” event in Pasay City, Loyzaga lauded their efforts in rehabilitating urban and regional ecosystems.
“Today is about you — an opportunity to pause and recognize the extraordinary work you do daily to restore and protect the lifelines of our cities and communities,” Loyzaga said.
The efforts of the rangers have led to the removal of 34.5 million kilos of waste from critical waterways in 2024 alone. NCR accounted for 29.6 million kilograms, while Region IV-A and Region III contributed 3.3 million kilograms and 1.58 million kilograms, respectively.
“These numbers represent more than just statistics. Every kilogram of waste removed means cleaner rivers, reduced flooding and safer communities, particularly after the disasters and typhoons we experienced last year,” Loyzaga stressed.
As frontline defenders against pollution and flooding, the rangers work under challenging conditions to keep waterways clear, she said.
Their efforts are especially crucial during storms and heavy rains, where they remove debris to prevent water stagnation and mitigate flood risks, she added.
Loyzaga also highlighted their role in promoting environmental awareness. Beyond clearing waste, Estero and River Rangers serve as advocates and educators, encouraging communities to adopt sustainable waste management practices.
“Your work goes beyond cleaning up; it is a powerful declaration of hope and determination — an affirmation that protecting the environment is not just a job but a shared responsibility woven into our communities and culture,” she said.
The recognition event was organized in partnership with Maynilad, Nestlé, SM Prime, and the International Container Terminal Services Inc. Foundation.
