Precious Momowei could be headed for the Summer League of the National Basketball Association (NBA) if and when Ariel Vanguardia lands the head coaching job at University of the East (UE).
Vanguardia said the 22-year-old Nigerian has what it takes to bang bodies with American and international prospects in the Summer League due to his 6-foot-9 frame, soft shooting hands and all-around skills that can only be seen in guards.
He said if ever he gets the Red Warriors coaching job, he will definitely work closely with Momowei and eventually endorse him to the Summer League team of the Atlanta Hawks, where he serves as an international scout.
Should Momowei make it to the Summer League, there’s a fighting chance for him to make it to the NBA or land a rich deal with other international teams in Europe or Asia.
“I can see him making the NBA Summer League roster,” Vanguardia said, thrilled over the possibility of working with the foreign student athlete who was supposed to be the Rookie of the Year in Season 87 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines if not for a one-game suspension he incurred following their game against University of Santo Tomas.
“He has the height and the skills to play in there (Summer League). If I will be given the chance to work with him at UE, at least I can bring him for tryouts for the Summer League team.”
Vanguardia is among the handful of candidates eyeing the UE head coaching job vacated by Jack Santiago.
Reports have it that he was already interviewed by a panel headed by UE president Dr. Zosimo Battad last Monday together with other candidates like Chris Gavina, Frankie Lim and Boysie Zamar.
Former National University mentor Eric Altamirano was also included in the shortlist but he pulled his name out due to his commitment with the National Basketball Training Center.
Vanguardia added that he will put premium on skills and player development if and when he bags the coveted position.
“We’re focusing on player development,” said Vanguardia, a seasoned mentor who had already called the shots at all levels, including the Metropolitan Basketball League, Philippine Basketball Association, National Collegiate Athletic Association, Asean Basketball League and Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
His most recent stint was with the Hawks, where he served as assistant coach under Ron Nored in their Summer League team, paving the way for him to become one of their international scouts.
“Hopefully, we get it (UE coaching job).”
