Vice President Sara Duterte on Saturday urged Filipinos to remember the heroism of the Special Action Force (SAF) members who were killed in the 2015 Mamasapano massacre.
In a message, Duterte said the “National Day of Remembrance of the heroic sacrifice of the SAF 44 is a powerful reminder of the importance of national unity and our collective responsibility to protect our country’s security.”
“Nine years have passed since the heartbreaking events in Mamasapano, but the memory of the SAF 44 lingers on in our hearts,” she said.
“On this solemn anniversary, we remember their sacrifice, bravery, and unwavering commitment to duty,” the Vice President added.
Duterte said the courage of the elite commandos “in the face of unimaginable danger was a testament to their patriotism and dedication to serving our nation.”
“As we continue to honor their lives and extend our deepest condolences to their families and loved ones, let us also acknowledge the complexities and dangers faced by those who serve in law enforcement and the armed forces,” she said.
“May the lessons learned from this tragic loss inspire us to work together to overcome challenges and strive for a safer and more secure future for all Filipinos,” she added.
In January 2015, 44 SAF police officers were killed in an encounter with a combined force of fighters from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and other armed elements in Mamasapano, Maguindanao.
