Instagram is taking mobile video creation to the next level with the launch of Edits, its brand-new app tailored for creators who want to bring their ideas to life with ease and style.

“Today we’re announcing a new app called Edits for those of you who are passionate about making videos on your phone,” said Adam Mosseri, Instagram's head.

“There’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens, it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators.”

Interestingly, Mosseri announced Edits on the same day the US government banned CapCut — a mobile video editing app owned by ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company — alongside TikTok.

With the uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s future in the US, Instagram has been ramping up efforts to position itself as a hub for TikTok users. Initiatives like extending Reels durations and introducing a TikTok-inspired profile grid underscore this strategy.

The release of Edits is Instagram’s direct response to the void left by CapCut’s ban, offering creators a powerful alternative.

Key Features of Edits:

  • Extended Video Recording: Capture videos up to 10 minutes long and organize drafts in one centralized location for seamless project management.

  • Advanced Editing Tools: Utilize a timeline for clip-level precision, auto-enhance options, and effects such as green screen, overlays, and transitions.

  • Inspiration Tab: Discover trending audio insights and stay updated with real-time popular content within the app.

  • High-Quality Recording: Record videos in HDR and up to 1080p resolution.

  • Content Performance Analytics: Access detailed insights to measure the success of your creations.

  • Collaboration & Watermark-Free Exports: Share drafts with friends and fellow creators within the app and export watermark-free clips for use on other platforms.

Essentially, Edits is Instagram’s answer to CapCut, providing a comprehensive suite of tools for creating and enhancing Instagram Reels and other video content.

The app is free to pre-order on the Apple App Store, with its official release scheduled for 13 March 2025.
