Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri gave a heads-up on some of the app’s future updates in a post on Monday.
This week, the app rolled out a new look for profile grids, which sparked both excitement and frustration among users.
Mosseri admitted that he made a mistake by not informing users about Instagram’s new profile grid scale, which shifted from square to a rectangular vertical-aligned thumbnail.
“We started with the tall grid because most photos and videos that are uploaded to Instagram at this point are vertical, and rectangles do a better job showing off those photos and videos,” his post read.
Over the next few months, the platform will allow users to tweak the appearance of their profile thumbnails, giving them more flexibility to maintain the aesthetic they want for their profiles.
Another big change will be the profile highlights, the collection of curated Instagram stories. Mosseri said they are looking to switch the highlights to a singular tab as they push down a profile’s grid.
Instagram is also developing an update that will let users reorder their entire grid, allowing them to freely arrange their posts as they see fit.
Lastly, users will be able to post directly to their profile grid, skipping the feed entirely, which Mosseri mentioned “as a bonus.”
However, these changes are all part of an ongoing process with the goal of creating a simpler, cleaner profile that also maintains or increases creator control.
“This plan might change as we iterate over the next couple of months, but I’m hoping sharing our intentions early will help avoid any more harsh surprises. More to come,” he said.
Mosseri oversees all functions of Instagram, including engineering, product, and operations.
