Nestled in the heart of Tuscany’s Chianti wine region, between Florence and Siena, COMO Castello del Nero has rightfully earned its title as Italy’s top hotel in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards.

Also awarded a One Michelin Key 2024 in the Michelin Guide 2024 Italy Key Hotel list, this estate is more than just a place to stay — it’s an experience that combines luxury, history and remarkable hospitality.

A destination worth the hype

I had the chance to experience this sprawling estate in October 2024 with my wife and close friend, Teddy Manuel, while they were scouting Tuscany for destination weddings — we quickly learned that this hotel offers so much more.

From guests searching for a picture-perfect wedding venue to those looking for an Italian escape filled with exquisite cuisine and scenic vistas unique to Tuscany, COMO Castello del Nero delivers on every front.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS MATTER

The Arrival

The supposed 40-minute drive from Florence to the estate took a little longer as we intentionally enjoyed Tuscany’s famed postcard landscapes.

Winding hills, cypress trees and sunlit vineyards created a sense of anticipation. As we approached the property, we could not avoid leaving closer to the cars windscreen to take a better look at the stunning castle in front of us.

Upon entering its tall gates and driving up to the driveway, we felt the warmth of the staff’s welcome and as they attentively checked us in. It was smooth and refreshingly personal — a sign of the impeccable service that sets this property apart.

We also had a cozy bedroom at the corner of the castle. One window was perfect for watching the sunrise.

The Suites

The 12th-century castle houses 50 intricately reimagined rooms and suites that blend history with modern indulgence. Thanks to Milan-based designer Paola Navone, the Renaissance-era frescoes have been carefully preserved while the interiors boast sleek, minimalist furnishings in soft, neutral tones.

High ceilings, large arched windows and whitewashed walls create an inviting sense of space, with views outside that look like a Tuscan masterpiece — rolling hills, forests and rows of cypress trees. We had a wonderful corner room that had a window to view the famous Tuscan sunrise.

For those seeking ultimate privacy, Villa San Luigi elevates the experience with its private check-in, infinity pool and room for 10. Think fully equipped kitchen, personal cinema, wellness space and views you won’t stop talking about.

A CULINARY JOURNEY

Dining at its finest

COMO Castello del Nero’s dining outlets don’t disappoint. Dining options are the Michelin-starred La Torre, rustic La Taverna and laid-back Pavilion.

Our highlight was dining at Pavilion, the all-day dining venue. It served up authentic Tuscan fare crafted from locally sourced ingredients and freshly harvested from their gardens.

The dishes were fantastic, but what stood out even more was the extraordinary service. The staff’s attention to detail was remarkable. Noticing that my wife is left-handed, they instinctively served her coffee on the left. Small but impactful gestures like these turned every meal into a memorable moment.

They anticipated our needs before we even asked — whether it was perfectly warmed bread or bacon cooked just the way I liked it. Oh, and the tiramisu? Life-changing. Light, creamy, and just the right amount of indulgence — it was hands down, the best I’ve ever had.

WELLNESS WORTH WRITING HOME ABOUT

The Spa

For those needing relaxation, the COMO Shambhala Retreat offers a pristine escape. Picture yourself enjoying a massage while overlooking the Tuscan hills or taking a dip in the heated 25-meter outdoor pool. The retreat also features thermal suites and a variety of complimentary classes. After a long day of exploring, I spent an hour unwinding here and felt completely renewed — a perfect complement to the beauty of the estate.

MORE THAN JUST A HOTEL

Extraordinary experiences

Beyond luxury accommodations, COMO Castello del Nero goes the extra mile to deliver unique, tailored experiences.

Guests can wander through picturesque olive groves, hop on bikes for an adventure, go on a truffle hunt and enjoy a four-course lunch using your finds, do an expert led oil or wine tasting in the medieval cellars or take a sunrise hot air balloon ride over Tuscany.

Best to check what’s available during the season you’ll be visiting ahead of time and make a booking.

Service that stands out

While the estate’s location and features may dazzle, it’s the service that sets COMO Castello del Nero apart. This isn’t just about luxury — it’s about hospitality that leaves a mark. From start to finish, the staff anticipated our needs, offering care that felt genuine and intentional. No matter how much beauty Tuscany offers, it’s the people who make your stay unforgettable. COMO Castello del Nero proves that even in a region brimming with incredible hotels, service is what builds loyalty.
