Former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson has announced plans to produce 500 electric jeepneys (e-jeepneys) every month. This initiative is part of his strategy to address the country’s transportation issues with modern and sustainable solutions. Along with e-jeepneys, his plan also includes manufacturing electric bikes and tricycles.
The Luis Chavit Singson (LCS) Group launched e-jeepneys in December 2024 as part of their support for the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP). This program seeks to improve public transport by introducing cleaner and more efficient vehicles. “We aim to start with 500 e-jeepneys per month, plus 2,000 e-bikes and 1,000 e-tricycles,” Manong Chavit said, adding that production will increase in the coming months.
Each e-jeepney is priced at P1.2 million. To make the transition easier for drivers and operators, the program offers soft loans, zero down payments, and interest-free financing options. Manong Chavit, who is running for a Senate seat, has included further financial support for public transport operators in his campaign platform to help them cope with modernization costs.
Initial orders for 3,000 e-jeepneys have already been placed. These vehicles will be manufactured in Lipa, Batangas, using advanced Korean technology to ensure quality. Charging stations are also planned for transport terminals to support the efficient operation of these vehicles.
At the official launch in Pasig City, Manong Chavit highlighted partnerships with South Korean e-mobility experts who collaborated with the LCS Group. His daughter, Rep. Richelle Louise Singson, emphasized the importance of these international partnerships in addressing urban mobility challenges.
“This marks the start of a sustainable and innovative future for the country,” Manong Chavit said. He views the project as a way to modernize transportation while promoting environmental sustainability.
Transport groups have expressed their support for Manong Chavit’s plans, seeing him as a champion for public transport modernization. With his focus on practical solutions and innovation, Manong Chavit hopes to make electric vehicles a key part of everyday commuting in the Philippines.
