‘Even if it is Christmas, you have to make sure not to go overweight so I will be working out a bit while on vacation’

There’s no stopping the country’s world boxing champions from getting out of shape even during the holiday season.
Reigning World Boxing Council minimumweight titlist Melvin Jerusalem even went running as he was in Hamburg, Germany, for the WBC convention.
Even International Boxing Federation (IBF) minimumweight ruler Pedro Taduran told DAILY TRIBUNE that while on a short break in his native Bicol, he would make sure to work out.
In fact, Taduran only left his training camp at the Elorde Sports Complex three days before Christmas Day.
“I will be back on the 3rd of January,” said Taduran, whose first defense of the IBF 105-lb crown last November was canceled.
Taduran had won the title by stopping the previously unbeaten Ginjiro Shigeoka last July in Otsu City and was pegged to face Zhu Dianxing on 23 November in Jeju, Korea.
Jerusalem was busier than Taduran as he captured the WBC jewels in March in Nagoya by edging Ginjiro’s brother Yudai before outclassing Mexican mandatory challenger Luis Castillo last September in Mandaluyong City.
“Even if it is Christmas, you have to make sure not to go overweight so I will be working out a bit while on vacation,” Taduran said.
As Taduran keenly awaits what’s down the road, Jerusalem seems to be the one with the more concrete schedule.
His chief handler and promoter JC Mananquil said a defense in Japan could very well take place in late-February or early-March.
Both Jerusalem and Taduran have one thing in common.
They want a shot at unifying the belts in the 105-lb championship.
Puerto Rican Oscar Collazo holds the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organization straps and has actually expressed his desire to face Taduran or Jerusalem in his quest to become undisputed champion.
