Teodoro Bautista, SM Supermalls vice president for corporate compliance Engr. Liza Silerio, SM Prime Holdings vice president for internal audit Marvin Perrin Pe, along with representatives from SM Center Pulilan, SM City Tanza, and SM City Tuguegarao.
SM Prime Holdings, Inc., one of Southeast Asia’s leading integrated property developers, earned top honors at the 2024 Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards and Sustainable Energy Awards organized by the Department of Energy (DOE).
At the Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards, SM Prime was recognized in the Large Building Category for SM Center Pulilan and in the New and Existing Building Category for SM City Tanza and SM City Tuguegarao. These awards highlight the company’s commitment to energy management through the adoption of energy-efficient technologies, including LED lighting, building management systems, and insulation to reduce electricity consumption. The awards evaluate companies based on their energy utilization, conservation efforts, and compliance with the Energy Management Systems Policy.
The DOE, led by Undersecretary Sharon Garin, also held the Sustainable Energy Awards during the launch of the Renewable Energy Market’s (REM) full commercial operations. SM Mall of Asia (MOA), SM Prime’s flagship shopping mall, received the first-ever Sustainable Energy Award for a Private Institution.
The award recognized SM MOA’s solar photovoltaic system, which consists of 10,426 solar panels and 40 inverters installed on the complex’s carpark buildings. This system generates 2.7 megawatts (MW) of peak energy, enough to power 1,790 households for a year.
To date, 35 SM Supermalls have solar installations on their roof decks, totaling 44 MW of peak energy. This commitment to renewable energy forms a crucial part of SM Prime’s sustainability efforts, helping reduce its carbon footprint while supporting the national energy goals.
Engr. Hans Sy, Jr., president of SM Engineering and Design Development, expressed gratitude for the recognition. "These awards affirm SM Prime’s commitment to sustainable operations that benefit both the environment and our communities. We are proud to contribute to a greener future through our active energy conservation," he said.
SM Prime also participates in the DOE’s Interruptible Load Program (ILP), contributing 110 MW of power during each ILP activity, with SM MOA providing the largest capacity among private sector participants at 15.92 MW. This effort further underscores SM Prime’s leadership in energy conservation.
Looking ahead, SM Prime aims to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2040. Through its renewable energy initiatives and waste management strategies, the company is aligning with national sustainability targets and contributing to a more sustainable future for the Philippines.
