The San Miguel Beermen scored a 115-102 win over Blackwater Bossing to post its second straight victory on Sunday in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
Import Torren Jones had another double-double game, scoring 29 points and hauling down 14 rebounds for the Beermen, who improved to a 3-2 win-loss record.
Head coach Leo Austria was happy to see the 30-year-old big man showcase his scrappiness despite only playing his second PBA game.
This is the second time the Beermen have won in the midseason conference since Austria was reinstated as head coach last Friday.
“He only had a few days to practice with us. He is trying to adapt to the system we had in the Philippines and slowly, he is seeing our gameplan,” Austria said.
“I’m so happy with him because we expected him to be a hard worker. He grabbed a lot of rebounds and scored a lot of putbacks.”
“That is what we need to sustain after what happened in the previous tournament. We didn’t have a player like him back then.”
Holding onto a 106-98 lead with 2:44 remaining in the fourth quarter, June Mar Fajardo and Jones scored six straight points to pull away for good.
Jones put the finishing touches on the game after making a layup with 47 ticks left.
Apart from Jones, June Mar Fajardo also had a double-double game with 27 points and 22 rebounds while CJ Perez had 15 points, six boards, and three assists for the Beermen.
