Senatorial candidate Luis “Manong Chavit” Singson emphasized the importance of integrity in leadership during the 202nd-anniversary celebration of Divine Word College of Vigan in Ilocos Sur on Saturday.
“If you lose your credibility, you are a nobody,” said Singson, a former Ilocos Sur governor and Senate candidate.
Singson recounted how his father instilled in him the belief that credibility is the cornerstone of effective leadership. He noted that maintaining a solid reputation and honoring one’s word are principles he adheres to in both his personal and public life.
Listed as No. 58 on the Senate ballot, Singson argued that leaders should not only make promises but also deliver on them.
“It’s an honor for me to be invited here since I studied at Divine Word College. But I was forced to go to Manila because it was dangerous for me to be here back then,” Singson said, referencing his personal connection to the school, which he credited with shaping his early years.
Noel Meinrado F. Plete, a representative of Batch 1984, voiced support for Singson, stating, “We need someone in the Senate who is a man of his word.”
The event, which celebrated the institution's legacy of producing influential figures, brought together alumni, local leaders, and community members. Singson, recognized for helping transform Ilocos Sur from one of the poorest provinces into one of the wealthiest, was among the notable alumni honored.
Beyond discussing integrity, Singson outlined his vision for public service and economic development, linking these goals to consistent, honest leadership. He pledged his commitment to modernizing public utility vehicles (PUVs), stating, “I will be the one to modernize the PUVs and finance the electric vehicles out of my own pocket.”
He also introduced the VBank initiative in Vigan, which aims to address the issue of financial exclusion, with 77 percent of Filipinos remaining unbanked. This project underscores his focus on fostering economic inclusion and addressing community needs.
