Criss Cross rolls into Spikers’ Turf semis
Criss Cross powered its way into the Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference semifinals with an imposing 25-8, 25-13, 25-7 rout of the winless Chichi DHTSI at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig on Wednesday.
The victory marked their fifth consecutive win and seventh overall (7-1), tying the King Crunchers with archrival Cignal HD Spikers at the top of the standings and securing the third semis slot.
The King Crunchers displayed dominance throughout the 53-minute match, holding the Titans to two of the league’s lowest-scoring sets.
Despite fielding their second stringers for extended minutes, head coach Tai Bundit’s squad never let up, showcasing their depth and intensity.
Gian Glorioso led the charge with 15 points built on eight attacks, five kill blocks, and two aces. He received ample support from Francis Saura, who tallied 12 points, and Chu Njigha, who added 11 markers.
Rookie setter Adrian Villados also impressed with 12 excellent sets after stepping in for Ish Polvorosa in the latter stages.
“Obviously, I’m very happy with our performance,” said Glorioso, one of the team’s top middle blockers from Ateneo.
“We already agreed to give our 100 percent regardless of who we are facing. We need to give everything we’ve got.”
The Rebisco-backed squad asserted its dominance with 47 attacks, 14 blocks and four aces, while Chichi DHTSI failed to register a single block or ace and managed only 18 attacks.
Team captain Jonathan Sorio and Quirt Marinas paced the Titans with six and five points, respectively, as they ended their campaign winless (0-9).
The win sets the stage for a much-anticipated clash between Criss Cross and Savouge on Sunday. The Spin Doctors, currently at 5-2, need a victory to boost their semis drive although they must first hurdle the EcoOil La Salle Green Oilers (4-3) tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Navy (4-3), currently battling the eliminated Martelli Meats at press time, remains in contention for the final semis spot. To keep their hopes alive, the Sealions face a do-or-die matchup against powerhouse Cignal tomorrow.
