The 10th Infantry Division recently handed the remains of slain alleged New People's Army political officer Joedil Cayapos Virtudazo, alias "Jerby," to his sister, Pablita Casanoza.
Maj. Mark Anthony Tito confirmed the handover of the body of the alleged officer of the NPA's Regional Sentro De Grabidad, North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee.
Tito said Virtudazo was killed in a 20-minute firefight during the commemoration of the Communist Party of the Philippines' founding anniversary on 26 December.
"During the encounter, the soldiers recovered one carbine rifle, an M4 rifle and three smartphones," Tito said.
The NPA has planned to re-infiltrate the Davao Region, which was already declared insurgency-free, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
"The death of Virtudazo, a notorious NPA leader in Northern Mindanao, surely weakens their leadership and their will to fight," the AFP said.
