The Philippine Coast Guard reported that a cargo vessel anchored off the waters of Castilla in Sorsogon caught fire on Thursday morning.
According to the PCG, vessel — identified as MV Ken — was docked at the Castilla Anchorage Area when it caught fire at 11 a.m. and initial reports said that the fire started in the vessel's mess hall.
The PCG said that the MV Ken had eight crew onboard who were all uninjured from the incident, as members of the PCG, the Philippine Navy and the Bureau of Fire Protection have responded to the scene and launched a joint search and rescue operation.
MV Ken is owned and operated by Pherwin Shipping Corporation located at Milaor town in Camarines Sur.
According to a 2 p.m. update from PCG Bicol, the fire is still being put out by members of Coast Guard Station Sorsogon along with the crew of MV Annabelle.
Meantime, the PCG ruled out the possibility of an oil spill in the MV Ken fire even though the vessel carries various kinds of fuel.
"The Philippine Coast Guard-Marine Environmental Group-Sorsogon conducted an ocular inspection at around 3:42 p.m. for possible traces of an oil spill and yielded a negative result," the PCG said.
Based on the inventory, MV Ken carried 2,300 liters of diesel oil and approximately 400 liters of lube oil.
In other news, a man believed to be suffering from depression jumped overboard a 2Go vessel in Calatagan, Batangas, according to the PCG also on Thursday.
The PCG said as of the morning of 2 November 2023, the search and rescue operations continued to locate the individual identified as Ralph Bernard Gerona, a resident of Iloilo City, who jumped from vessel MV Maligaya last 31 October 2023.
Based on the report, the incident happened at 3:50 p.m., more than a day after the vessel left Bacolod City bound for Manila last Tuesday.
The PCG alerted the Vessel Traffic Management Service-Corregidor operator regarding the man overboard incident.
Coast Guard Sub Station Calatagan initiated a search and rescue operation immediately, involving coordination with VTMS Batangas, Sea Marshall personnel onboard MV Maligaya, and CGSS Lubang. Transiting vessels in the vicinity, including MV Solid Sun, assisted in the search efforts.
Despite extensive efforts, the victim was not located due to poor visibility, leading to the termination of the search operation at 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday.
