The Commission on Elections announced that about six barangays in Lanao del Sur and one in Samar will hold their barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on Tuesday, following their failure to conduct the election on Monday.
According to Comelec chairman George Erwin Garcia, the election paraphernalia in the seven barangays did not arrive on time for the 30 October elections.
"We have six barangays in Lanao del Sur that will now hold the election today because the equipment did not arrive exactly before twelve o'clock yesterday," Garcia said in an interview.
Garcia added that authorities in Samar were attacked by insurgents which caused the delay of the election in the said barangay.
"There is also a barangay that has yet to hold elections in Calbayog City in Samar. The soldiers and the police, along with our election officials who were carrying election equipment to the barangay, were attacked by insurgents. They were fired upon before reaching the barangay, so they were unable to bring the equipment to the area," Garcia said.
The chairman stated that the affected barangays were properly informed on Monday of the delay in the election which is scheduled on Tuesday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
During the press conference after the precincts officially closed on Monday, Garcia reported that there was election-related violence occurred in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao where three were killed and thousands of teachers backed out of poll duty in the BARMM and Abra.
Garcia added that teachers backed out because of their previous experience of shooting incidents or being threatened for their poll work.
