Underscoring the importance of the agriculture sector, Senator Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go has once again called for the government to further safeguard the welfare and interests of small farmers and agricultural workers and to address reported agricultural smuggling in the country.
In an ambush interview after the relief operation he personally led in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro, the senator appealed to all concerned agencies to hasten the investigations on agricultural smuggling and make accountable all those who will be proven guilty.
The lawmaker cited Republic Act 10845 or the Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Law following the reports from the BoC that it has confiscated more than P1 billion worth of smuggled agricultural products since the start of the Marcos Administration.
BoC Spokesperson Arnaldo dela Torre Jr. reassured that the agency is intensifying its efforts against agricultural smuggling as part of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive.
Recently, Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura president Rosendo So cited that more smugglers of agricultural products are now operating in the country bringing in illegally sourced white and red onions, rice and frozen meat products, adding that these are new players not included in the list of agricultural smugglers previously submitted to the Senate.
