So much of our beliefs, behavior and choices are influenced or determined by the expectations and behavior of others. This calls to mind those who are without the advantages and privileges we enjoy.
Let us be grateful for what we have and look forward to all that is still to come. Let us be thankful for the things that are right in our lives and share our blessings with those who need it most. Let us be like mirrors that reflect the vision we desire. If we want love, respect, compassion, joy, understanding and forgiveness, then let us reflect the same values to our loved ones and friends, even to those who hurt us. If we want truth, honesty and goodwill, then let us reflect these same values in thought, word and deed. After all, what we radiate outside is what will return to us.
This reminds me of an experience I had when I was in my early forties. My beloved mother requested me to visit my ailing aunt Elizabeth who was celebrating her birthday that day. My mother had an important appointment she could not move so I gladly agreed. I brought a butter-pecan cake, her favorite red roses and a basket of her favorite fruits: grapes, pears, oranges, cherries and mangoes. Her eyes lit up when I entered her dimly lit bedroom. I tightly hugged her and she suddenly broke into tears. I let her cry while gently patting her back in loving sympathy. She then spoke while holding my hand, "You always knew you were not my favorite niece but despite this knowledge you have always treated me with respect and love."
She gave me her biggest smile, which warmed my heart. She then remarked, "Don't we all wish what others have? But once we get it, somehow it did not satisfy our hearts? Because we come to the realization that what we wish for is right in front of our very nose."
Such a forthright statement that hit me.
Don't we all wish what others have? Don't we all wish what others take for granted? Don't we all wish for something that turns out not to be a big deal after all.?
Let us reflect on this truth as we review life's meaning in the context of this reality.
