The government is pursuing decongesting jail facilities under the supervision and control of the Bureau of Corrections, according to Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla as he said penal reforms form part of the 100-day highlights of the Department of Justice.
"We are preparing the report as we are doing something about the justice system, the improvement of the system of the National Bureau of Investigation, the prosecution service and trying to improve also the decongestion of BuCor jails," Remulla said.
The DoJ is in the process of releasing prisoners through parole and probation. The agency is also seeing through the transfer of detainees from maximum to the supermax which will be in an area outside Metro Manila.
Remulla said the agency is also now in the final phase of regionalization and the government corporate counsel is also doing their share of the job along with the Office of Solicitor General under SolGen Menardo Guevarra.

The SolGen is doing its job pursuing the cases of the government while the Public Attorney's Office under lawyer Persida Acosta is busy defending people who need their services.
In the decongestion process, Remulla said the PAO is on top in tending in every jail in the country and at the moment there is no backlog of cases even under the 60 days grace period to resolve cases.
Meanwhile, there are 43 persons deprived of liberty at the Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog, Leyte who pleaded for the grant of parole or executive clemency.
Bureau of Corrections chief of the public information office Corrections Chief Supt. Julie May C. Taguiam said the 43 PDLs have been interviewed by the regional office of the Parole and Probation Administration.
"As per record, the PPA through the assistance of the Inmate Documents and Processing Section headed by CSO4 Maximo R. Marcos II has interviewed a total of 176 PDL starting from 30 May 2022, up to 29 September 2022," Taguiam said.
