S.A.D. but not sad: Celebrating Singles Awareness Day

Pamela Pascual

While Valentine’s Day puts the spotlight on romantic relationships, Singles Awareness Day, celebrated every 15th of February, shifts the focus to self-love, independence, and the joys of being unattached. Often humorously abbreviated as S.A.D., the day serves as a lighthearted yet meaningful reminder that love comes in many forms — not just from a significant other, but from friends, family, and most importantly, oneself.

The occasion encourages single individuals to embrace their relationship status without societal pressure. It’s an opportunity to celebrate individuality and practice self-care, while recognizing that fulfillment doesn’t solely stem from being part of a couple.

While the exact origins of Singles Awareness Day are unclear, the holiday has gained traction over the years, particularly among younger generations who champion self-love and reject outdated stigmas surrounding singlehood. The rise of social media has further popularized the celebration, with individuals proudly posting about their solo adventures, self-care routines, and fun-filled gatherings with fellow singles.

A day for self-empowerment

Singles Awareness Day was intentionally placed a day after Valentine’s Day as a positive counterpoint to the heavily romanticized holiday. It challenges the notion that being single is synonymous with loneliness and instead highlights the freedom and opportunities that come with it.

There are several perks to being unattached. Singles often enjoy greater flexibility with their schedules, travel plans, and career choices. Career decisions, like accepting a new job or relocating, become simpler when there’s no need to factor in a partner’s preferences.

At its core, Singles Awareness Day underscores the idea that love is not confined to romantic relationships. It extends to the bonds shared with family, friends, pets, and most importantly, oneself.

As the celebration continues to grow in popularity, it serves as a timely reminder that being single is not a status to be pitied but a life stage to be embraced. On 15 February, whether you’re spending the day pampering yourself, hanging out with friends, or simply enjoying your own company, take pride in your independence. After all, self-love is the foundation of all other forms of love.
