Daunting task awaits Yulo brothers
Brothers Carlos and Eldrew Yulo swing into action Sunday as they compete in the 54th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships at Rotterdam Ahoy in the Netherlands.
Both Filipinos are scheduled to start their campaigns at 4 p.m. Manila time, aiming to qualify for as many event finals as possible.
Carlos, 26, heads into the competition fresh from a two-gold performance at the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, last September, where he ruled the men’s floor exercise and vault.
Eldrew, 18, also made an impression in his Asian Games debut, claiming bronze in the horizontal bar.
Despite their success in Nagoya, the brothers returned to training in Antibes, France, under national team coach Aldrin Castañeda as they prepared for the World Championships.
Although this year’s competition is not an Olympic qualifier for individual gymnasts, Carlos remains focused on improving his routines and contending for titles.
“I always focus on my performance and preparation for the competition — preparation, good performance and good results. So, even if I don’t win a medal, I look at my consistency in preparing for the competition,” Carlos said.
“I’m gonna do all six apparatus, and hopefully we get the titles.”
Eldrew, meanwhile, is eager to measure himself against the world’s best while addressing the self-doubt he experiences during training and competition.
