The families of eight Filipinos killed in Israel since the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attacks gathered in Taguig City on Tuesday for a memorial marking three years since the assault that triggered the war in Gaza.
The 13 October ceremony, organized by the Israeli Embassy with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa), brought together relatives of the dead, former hostages and survivors.
Four Filipinos were killed in the initial Hamas assault, which left about 1,200 people dead.
Four others died in subsequent hostilities.
Among those attending was Camille Jesalva, a Filipino caregiver who protected her 95-year-old employer during the attack.
Two former hostages, Jimmy Pacheco and Noralyn Babadilla, were also recognized.
Israeli Ambassador Dana Kursh pledged continued assistance to the bereaved families, while Philippine officials said support would remain available through government welfare programs.
The commemoration included a candle-lighting ceremony and photographs of the victims.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac also announced plans for a labor mission to Israel in November to discuss employment conditions and the welfare of Filipino workers.
The visit will include meetings with Filipino workers and Israeli officials as Manila seeks to maintain labor cooperation despite continuing security concerns.
Owwa administrator Patricia Yvonne Caunan said families of the deceased could continue accessing welfare assistance, including educational and livelihood support.
The memorial comes three years after the attack that set off a devastating war in Gaza, where more than 70,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza health authorities.
