Jose Rizal University (JRU) extended its winning streak to three games after routing San Sebastian College, 102-78, in Season 102 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament Friday at the Philsports Arena.
The Heavy Bombers improved to 5-1 in Group A while handing the Golden Stags their seventh straight loss.
“We started flat. We had to remind them about their effort and energy as that was lacking from them in the first half,” JRU coach Nani Epondulan said.
“Credit to the boys and players that they responded.”
JRU held a slim 56-51 lead early in the third quarter before unleashing a 16-5 run capped by a Chris Hubilla triple at the 3:44 mark to widen the gap to 72-56.
The Heavy Bombers carried a commanding 75-63 advantage into the fourth quarter and kept the Stags at bay the rest of the way.
Lawrence Mangubat led JRU with 20 points, while Hubilla posted a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Jalen Garcia added 13 points, while Jahmir Eligado chipped in 12.
Niel Castor paced San Sebastian with 17 points, while Ralph Gabat had 12 and Dash Cuya added 10 as the Stags fell to 0-7.
