Personnel from the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) underwent specialized cybersecurity training Thursday conducted by the Department of Justice (DoJ) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to safeguard prison databases, surveillance networks, and operational infrastructure against digital threats.

The seminar, themed “Within the Walls: Strengthening Cyber Capabilities,” aimed to enhance threat detection, incident response, and data protection practices across the penal system’s administration.

Speaking on behalf of BuCor director general Gregorio Catapang Jr., deputy director general Al Perreras stressed that modernizing correctional operations creates new vulnerabilities that require heightened vigilance from all personnel.

“As we protect our facilities within physical walls, we must also safeguard our digital environment against cyber threats that can compromise operations, data and public trust,” Perreras said.

He also cited that basic protocols like access controls, strong authentication, and prompt reporting are vital to preventing breaches.

BuCor relies heavily on digital databases, internal communications, and electronic surveillance tools to manage state correctional facilities and oversee Persons Deprived of Liberty nationwide.

Catapang praised the inter-agency collaboration, stating that establishing strong digital defenses alongside trained personnel remains a critical institutional priority as technology becomes further integrated into public safety and prison administration.
