The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) suspended the San Beda University-Jose Rizal University game on Friday after heavy rains left the Filoil EcoOil Centre court too slippery for play.

The opening game was halted early in the first quarter after several players slipped on the playing surface.

With JRU leading San Beda, 9-3, at the 5:25 mark, officials called for a timeout to inspect the court before the NCAA managing committee eventually decided to suspend the contest.

Heavy rains in San Juan had affected the playing surface, reportedly leaving the hardwood “too moist” for basketball activities.

Prioritizing player safety, the NCAA said the JRU-San Beda game will be rescheduled on a date to be announced.

“Please be advised that the canceled NCAA seniors basketball game between San Beda University and Jose Rizal University will be scheduled at a later date. Please wait for the official announcement regarding the rescheduled date, time, and venue,” the NCAA said in a statement.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. The safety of our players is our priority. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued support.”

It was the first meeting between the two schools since San Beda edged JRU, 70-69, for the bronze medal in the AsiaBasket National Student Athletes Championship World Invitational last August.
