A new road, same game

The Philippines does not lack talent. What it needs is a system strong enough to keep that talent moving forward.
After a whirlwind weekend at Pradera Verde Golf and Country Club covering the final leg and national finals of the Superkids Junior Elite Tour, I am back on the road — this time for the Southeast Asian Golf Team Championship.
The transition has been anything but leisurely. The final round at Pradera Verde was still in progress last Sunday when I made a dash for Clark International Airport to catch my evening flight. The golfers were battling for titles on the course; I was battling traffic, the clock and the very real possibility of missing my flight.
Talk about cutting it close.
My legs are still trying to figure out what happened, but apparently, they did not get a vote. Golf, as usual, waits for no one.
The transition from junior golf to the SEA championship, however, feels perfectly natural. Many of the players here are products of the same development system that gives young golfers regular opportunities to compete, gain experience and test themselves against the best in their age groups.
In the Philippines, that system has been strengthened in recent years by the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines (JGFP), headed by Oliver Gan. Through its year-round tournament calendar, the JGFP has helped create a deeper pool of young talent and, just as importantly, a clearer path from junior competition to the national team.
That steady competition is beginning to show.
Young players are learning not only how to hit good golf shots, but also how to handle pressure, recover from mistakes and finish tournaments. Those lessons become invaluable when they move to bigger events, where the courses are unfamiliar, the fields are stronger and every shot carries the weight of an entire team.
Gan, who has been designed as one of the team captains, is also using this championship as a learning experience. Together with national coaches Ramon Brobio and Keena Puzon, he is observing how a major international team event is organized — knowledge that could prove valuable when the JGFP hosts its second World Team Championships next year at Pradera Verde in Lubao, Pampanga.
Even the transportation system offers a lesson.
Shuttle buses run every 30 minutes from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., leaving on schedule whether full or not. It may seem like a small detail, but reliable transportation allows teams to plan their days, protect their routines and keep their focus on the competition.
At Pradera Verde, transportation should be less of a concern. Participants will be staying at Casa Verde, just a stone’s throw from the course. Still, the system here shows how thoughtful organization can make a demanding tournament smoother for everyone involved.
This is also my first time covering an event in Hong Kong. Previous trips were purely recreational, but this visit offers a different perspective. I am seeing not only a new place, but also how a major international team championship is staged — from the movement of players and officials to the details that shape the competitive environment.
And that is where the bigger story begins.
The daily leaderboard will determine who wins medals, but the long-term story is about what happens before and after the final putt. Every junior tournament, coaching session and international appearance helps prepare young golfers for the next level.
Talent is clearly available. The greater challenge is to sustain it.
Promising players need consistent competition, quality coaching and access to support systems that address more than technique. International exposure is equally valuable. Playing overseas teaches golfers how to adjust to different course conditions, weather, playing styles and tournament environments. It also forces them to develop the composure required when they are competing against players with more experience or greater resources.
The Philippines does not lack talent. What it needs is a system strong enough to keep that talent moving forward.
With continued investment from golf organizations, coaches, clubs, schools and sponsors, the country can develop not only exceptional individual players but also deeper and more competitive national teams. The goal is not simply to produce one outstanding golfer every few years. It is to create a generation capable of competing consistently — and eventually winning — on the regional and global stage.
That progress may not always be visible in a single leaderboard. It may take years to fully measure. But it is being built one tournament, one lesson and one opportunity at a time.
For now, though, the focus is on the players taking their next step.
It is exciting to see many of the region’s rising stars move onto the international team stage. The course is bigger, the competition is tougher and the flags are flying.
Expect big swings, brave shots and dramatic finishes — and probably a few parents, coaches and caddies who are even more nervous than the players.
For now, the stage belongs to the players.
They will face unfamiliar courses, stronger opposition and the pressure that comes with wearing their country’s colors. Whatever the results, each round will add to their experience — and perhaps to the future of Philippine golf.
That makes the journey worth following, one shot at a time.
