A pair of expensive slippers can always be replaced. An innocent animal's cannot.
The recent viral case involving content creator Hart Yu has reignited public outrage over animal cruelty after videos circulating online showing him threatening dogs and having them forcibly captured over a pair of chewed slippers.
“Nagagalit sila sa akin dahil ‘yung aso, ipinahuli ko at ipinapapatay ko ( They are angry with me because I had the dog rounded up and ordered it killed),” Yu said in one of his videos.
According to an update from the Animal Kingdom Foundation, the barangay immediately coordinated with the Municipal Police of Lemery following the viral videos. The organization said the incident is now under review and awaiting the proper police referral and investigation.
Hart Yu has also been summoned by officials to explain his side of the incident.
AKF added that the two dogs are now safe.
Acts of cruelty toward animals often reveal a disturbing lack of empathy. Dogs and cats do not understand the value of branded slippers and luxury bags. They act on instinct, not malice. Owners are responsible for training, protecting and caring for their pets, not responding with violence when accidents happen.
Harming an animal is never an acceptable form of discipline. Philippine law, through the Animal Welfare Act, penalizes acts of cruelty, neglect and abuse. While legal protections are on paper, strict implementations by authorities are still needed for us to move forward. Our country has a long way to go in terms of animal welfare.
May this case serve as a reminder for Filipinos to support the right people online. Popularity and follower count should never outweigh basic human decency.
