Unsung heroes highlighted in UAAP Season 89 opening ceremony

Far Eastern University put the spotlight on the unsung heroes behind the success of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

It was a colorful and meaningful celebration in honor of the kuyas, ates, ma’ams, sirs, and countless others who have helped build the league and shape generations of student-athletes over the past 89 seasons on Saturday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

For the second straight season, the UAAP opening ceremony paid tribute to the pillars who have helped sustain the league.

This time, student leaders, professors, staff, drivers, helpers, and other people working behind the scenes took center stage.

For host FEU, the tribute included seven of its student council presidents as well as the likes of Kuya Rene, Kuya Mar, Ma’am Grace, and Ma’am Che.

The other member schools likewise recognized individuals who have played important roles in their respective institutions.

University of the East honored assistant principal Swisa Almeyda, while University of Santo Tomas recognized IPEA's Rod Sambuang. University of the Philippines paid tribute to OASD director Bo Perasol, while De La Salle University honored vice chancellor Fritzie de Vera.

Adamson University featured student photographer Migs Llave, National University recognized professor Aries Manuel, and Ateneo de Manila University honored high school staff and faculty members Cyrus Lim, Edmund Dela Rosa, and Louie Melosantos.

The tribute reflected this season's theme, "For Everyone, UAAP," underscoring that the league's success extends beyond the athletes competing on the field and court.

The student-athletes cared for by these pillars have not only represented their respective universities but have also gone on to carry the Philippine flag in international competitions as members of the national teams.

UAAP Season 89 chairman Johnny Montinola highlighted the broader role of the league in developing student-athletes and producing athletes for the national teams.

"As you know, the universities are vying for 60 events, and each school is a defending champion. Finalists also aspire to take the next step, while contenders are looking to barge into the Final Four," Montinola said.

"These are exciting events, but do know that the league is also about student development and formation through sportsmanship, fair competition, pathways for career opportunities, and opportunities to represent the country."

Montinola also pointed to the UAAP's significant contribution to the national teams.

"Did you know that for the combined national Gilas Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams, UAAP players represent almost two-thirds of the entire teams? And for volleyball, that number is significantly higher at 93%," he said.

"So, 93% of the players on the national teams come from the UAAP. And a big tribute to the women’s team, because 14 out of 14 players are from us.

"So, the UAAP is really a national sports development system. We likewise have representatives in other sports, including athletics and pole vaulting, chess, judo, fencing, taekwondo, and table tennis. And let’s not forget the coaches. Many of our coaches form part of the national pool of coaches."

But for Season 89, Montinola said the UAAP wanted to recognize those who rarely get the spotlight despite playing an important role in the development of its athletes.

"But this year’s league is especially heartening and fulfilling for us. It is a recognition of the many people behind the scenes who make a team, a school, and indeed a league great," he said.

"To the faculty who uphold high academic standards, generously giving their time and support to those who need it. To classmates and friends who share everyday experiences and keep the athletes grounded. To the physios and strength and conditioning personnel who keep them safe and performing at their optimum. And to those who quietly provide help—the dorm guards, the drivers, and the food service teams—so the athletes, in turn, can be at their best in serving the university," he added.

The tribute also extended to the next generation of athletes, with Montinola recognizing the basic education students who aspire to follow in the footsteps of their university counterparts.

"And finally, to our basic education kids who aspire for excellence in sports as well. Their bright light and hunger fuel our efforts," he said.

"So, this shout-out is especially for all of you."

The message, ultimately, was about the collective effort required to build championship teams and develop student-athletes.

"The help of all to win championships. Respect of beliefs, roles, and contributions. Nothing is ever too small. A goal of teamwork for team wins," Montinola said.

"Not self, not home, but for school and for everyone you may be."

The opening ceremony also featured the traditional parade of athletes, this time staged on the arena's LED floor that replaced the usual hardcourt.

FEU women's football player Nikk Dhrea Duran led the oath of sportsmanship, while the ceremonial torch was passed through representatives from the eight member schools.

The torchbearers were Adamson softball's Jaycel Roldam, Ateneo badminton's Lyrden Laborte, La Salle's Shevana Laput, NU Pep Squad's John Claude Cabido, UE fencing's Shawn Felipe, UP football's Ramil Bation, UST beach volleyball's Sofiah Pagara, and finally FEU athletics' Edna Magtubo.

Montinola then officially declared UAAP Season 89 open.

What followed was the first-ever UAAP Kickoff Show headlined by Vice Ganda and Gloc-9.
