A British driver sped through Utah’s famous natural speedway on 11 August to set a new world record for the fastest land travel.
Riding a JCB Hydromax tubular car powered by two hydrogen internal combustion engines, Andy Green clocked 654 kilometers per hour (kph) when it rolled on the Bonneville Salt Flats, New York Post (NYP) reported.
The speed easily beat the previous class record for a hydrogen engine, which had stood at 298 kph, according to NYP.
Incidentally, Green was a former Royal Air Force fighter pilot and the only person to have broken the sound barrier on land when he set the overall land speed record of 1,228 kph in a car powered by twin jet engines in 1997, NYP reported.
Green also drove the world’s fastest diesel-powered vehicle, Dieselmax, at 563 kph in 2006.
Meanwhile, an old spacecraft’s signal traveled at the speed of light, or 1.08 billion kph.
Voyager 1, launched by the United States space agency NASA in 1977 to study Jupiter’s atmosphere and Saturn’s rings, still communicated via radio waves with Earth while speeding through interstellar space, past the Solar System, at 61,000 kph.
NASA’s command to Voyager 1 was received by the farthest spacecraft in 23.5 hours, and its response also took the same time to reach Earth, Scienceblog.com reported.
The slow communication was because of Voyager 1’s distance from Earth after 49 years of traveling.
As of August 2026, Voyager 1 was approximately 25.6 billion kilometers from Earth.
NASA’s live Voyager position page said Voyager 1 would reach a distance of one light-day from Earth in November 2026, meaning its radio signal would take 24 hours to be received on Earth, according to Scienceblog.com.
