Sei Young Kim made the most of soft conditions at TPC Boston on Thursday, closing with a spectacular chip-in eagle on the par-5 seventh to fire an 8-under 64 and grab the first-round lead at the FM Championship in Norton, Massachussetts.

Kim caught fire during a six-hole stretch, going 6 under with four birdies and the eagle to move to the top of the leaderboard. She needed just 24 putts in a round that continued the momentum from her third-place finish at last week’s CPKC Women’s Open.

The South Korean said the softer fairways and greens compared with last year allowed her to be more aggressive.

“I feel like this course is a little softer, greens are a little softer than last year,” Kim said. “That’s why I was able to get a lot of birdie chance, even front nine.”

Miyu Yamashita, still riding the high of her runaway victory in Edmonton, Alberta, was one shot behind after a 7-under 65, tied with Emily Kristine Pedersen.

Yamashita produced another birdie barrage, making 10 birdies to lead the field. A double bogey on the par-3 eighth briefly slowed her down, but she responded with an extraordinary back nine, shooting 30 while making seven birdies in eight holes.

The Japanese star also needed only 24 putts.

“Today putting, middle putting,” Yamashita said. “So good.”

Somi Lee was another stroke back after opening with a 6-under 66.

World No. 1 Nelly Korda had a quieter start, shooting an even-par 72 in the final LPGA Tour event before the Solheim Cup. All 10 players ranked in the women’s world top 10 are competing this week.

The FM Championship boasts a $4.4-million purse, the largest on the LPGA Tour outside of the four majors.
