The Philippines monitored more Chinese military vessels than maritime militia ships in its waters during the first half of 2026, reflecting what the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) described as China’s increasing use of force in the West Philippine Sea.

AFP special spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Rear Adm. Roy Vincent Trinidad (Ret.) said Tuesday that the Philippine Navy monitored 77 China Coast Guard (CCG) ships from January to June, up from 68 during the same period last year.

Meanwhile, sightings of People’s Liberation Army Navy warships fell to 78 from 100, while China maritime militia vessels declined to 850 from 999.

“This observed shift in the deployment pattern of having fewer PLAN ships and MM vessels and an increase in CCG ships indicates an emphasis on law enforcement functions in the West Philippine Sea,” Trinidad said during a press briefing at Camp Aguinaldo.

He said the number of Chinese research and survey vessels also increased to 44 from 33.

“This included unusual track patterns of 16 RSVs within our maritime zones and other areas of interest,” Trinidad said.

He said the movements were likely linked to marine scientific research or hydrographic surveys, particularly near the Kalayaan Island Group and the eastern seaboard of Luzon up to the Balintang and Bashi channels.

“The Armed Forces remains committed to conducting lawful maritime and air operations, strengthening coordination with partner agencies, and maintaining a credible defense posture,” he said.
