Disney has officially greenlit an original anime series based on the hit video game franchise ‘Kingdom Hearts,’ announced during the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.

Disney has officially greenlit the first-ever original television series based on the hit video game franchise Kingdom Hearts.
Announced during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, the upcoming anime series, currently under the working title Kingdom Hearts, is being developed for Disney+ in partnership with legendary game creator Tetsuya Nomura and the creative team at Square Enix.
Rather than adapting the games directly, the series will tell a brand-new story that expands the Kingdom Hearts universe while staying true to the beloved characters and themes that have made the franchise a global phenomenon.
“Kingdom Hearts has captivated gamers everywhere with its unique blend of adventure and imagination,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family.
“There’s something really exciting about taking a world fans have spent years exploring through the games and bringing it to life in a completely new way. And with a creative team that is working closely with the legendary Tetsuya Nomura, our new series will be unmistakably Kingdom Hearts, while giving fans a whole new way to experience the world they love.”
Nomura, who created the franchise more than two decades ago, will contribute to the anime’s development alongside Square Enix.
The series joins Disney+’s expanding lineup of original animated programming, which includes Dragon Striker, Phineas and Ferb, Big City Greens, and upcoming titles Messi and the Giants, Warrior Cats and Journey.
No release date or additional casting details have been announced.
