  • BAGUIO CITY-- The Department of Education (DepEd) expressed sorrow over the deaths of five students in the landslide that struck Barangay Guisad Surong, Baguio City, following eight consecutive days of continuous regional rainfall.

DepEd confirmed that the young victims included two Grade 7 students from Guisad Valley National High School (GVNH), one Grade 3 student and one Grade 4 student from Bonifacio Elementary School (BES), and one student under the Alternative Learning System (ALS). Class suspensions remain enforced in affected areas as field offices collaborate with disaster response teams and local government units to safeguard students and school personnel while assessing damaged campus infrastructure and slope protection.

The statement from the DepEdfollows the conclusion of search, rescue, and retrieval operations at Sitio Riverside, Purok 2, Barangay Guisad Surong at 2:50 AM on 11 August 2026. Emergency personnel accounted for all 13 reported victims after retrieving the body of an eight-year-old child from ground zero at 2:30 AM.

Official announcement from the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC )confirmed that 10 individuals died while three survived the tragedy.

The deadly incident occurred at approximately 7:20 PM on 9 August 2026, when soil collapsed following heavy rainfall brought by the enhanced southwest monsoon, striking three houses and directly impacting five families.

Responders extracted four victims immediately after the collapse, transporting three survivors to the hospital and confirming one fatality at the site. Search efforts continued through hazardous conditions as the death toll gradually rose over two days, ultimately reaching 10 after the retrieval of the final missing victims on 11 August 2026.
