When the New York Knicks won the National Basketball Association championship in June, New Yorkers celebrated. The city’s sanitation department joined the celebration by raffling off five commemorative Knicks-themed metal waste baskets. The 30-pound, 28-inch-tall bins were the same dimensions as those lining the Big Apple streets but were brand new, the New York Post reported.
The New York City Department of Sanitation thought of raffling off the litter baskets after a JP Morgan executive emptied one such bin along the triumphant team’s parade route and took it home. It was a reminder to the public not to litter or steal public trash bins.
Meanwhile, a Florida pizzeria is offering free specialty pizza to its customers.
“I just gotta give it away for free,” Dustin Crum, owner of Wildman’s Pizza, Pasta and Python in Everglades City, said of his pizza with snake meat.
Crum explained that he cannot sell food not prepared by a licensed snake butcher because doing so is illegal.
The snake hunter also touted his barter system, under which he accepts dead pythons as payment for large specialty pies.
The serpentrepreneur thought participants in the Florida Python Challenge, a Burmese python hunting contest to address the infestation of the Everglades forests by the invasive species that concluded on 19 July, had nowhere to keep the reptiles they killed.
So swapping them for pizza would be mutually beneficial — the python hunters get food to eat, and Crum gets raw materials for his snake merchandise.
The pizzeria also sells skin cream soap made from snake oil and fashion accessories made from python bones and skin.
