Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. has addressed growing discussion surrounding the newly introduced Asian Pop category at the Grammy Awards following BTS’ decision not to participate in this year’s Grammy Awards process.
In a public statement, Mason said he respects the group’s choice while expressing disappointment that they would not be part of this year’s awards.
“I am saddened to hear that BTS has chosen not to participate in the Grammy Awards process this year, but as a music creator, I understand and respect their decision.”
He also sought to clarify the purpose behind the creation of the Asian Pop category, stressing that it was designed to celebrate the remarkable growth, diversity and artistic excellence emerging from Asia—not to separate Asian artists from the Grammy’s highest honors.
According to Mason, the new category expands opportunities for recognition by giving more artists a platform while allowing them to remain eligible for the prestigious General Field awards, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year.
“Submitting music in a genre category such as Asian Pop, or Jazz or Country does not exclude an artist from also submitting and being considered in the General Field categories.”
He further emphasized that genre-specific awards and General Field recognition are not mutually exclusive, saying artists are free to pursue both.
“Recognition in a genre category and recognition in the General Field are not mutually exclusive. An artist can absolutely pursue both.”
Mason concluded by reaffirming the Recording Academy’s commitment to serving musicians around the world, promising to continue expanding its global reach and listening to artists across different cultures and languages.
“The Grammy organization is here to serve music and all the people who make it… we will continue to listen to the global music community and work to honor and celebrate all the artists whose music moves the world.”
