More than a decade after Heneral Luna became a landmark in Philippine cinema, award-winning actor John Arcilla says the historical epic continues to shape both his career and his life.

During the Star Magic Spotlight press conference, Arcilla reflected on how portraying General Antonio Luna became the defining role that transformed his standing in the entertainment industry. Without negotiating for higher pay, he revealed that producers themselves significantly raised his talent fee after witnessing the film’s success, marking a turning point in his decades-long acting career.

Beyond the financial rewards, the veteran actor shared that the role forever changed how audiences see him. While he was once recognized by the names of various characters he portrayed over the years, he is now almost universally identified as “General Luna”—a title he embraces with gratitude because it reflects the lasting impact the film made on generations of viewers.

Arcilla also recalled amusing encounters with students who often ask him to deliver the fiery outbursts that made his portrayal unforgettable. Although he admits he is more reserved about repeating the character’s colorful language in public, he believes audiences ultimately connected with the film’s deeper themes of patriotism, courage, and love for country.

Released in 2015 and directed by Jerrold Tarog, Heneral Luna evolved from a modest theatrical release into one of the most celebrated Filipino films of its generation. Its success sparked renewed interest in Philippine history and became the foundation of Tarog’s acclaimed historical film series.

Outside acting, Arcilla is embracing another side of his artistry through music. Now recording under Star Music, he is preparing an album composed largely of songs he wrote himself. He shared that years of performing in musical theater helped him overcome his fear of singing, allowing him to pursue songwriting with greater confidence.

The actor also revealed that one of his upcoming tracks playfully references the famous expletive closely associated with General Luna, a creative choice that received the approval of Star Music executive Jonathan Manalo and eventually found its place in his forthcoming album.
