The 22nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival is framing this year’s celebration of independent cinema with two internationally celebrated films that place Filipino women at the heart of deeply personal and socially relevant narratives.

Serving as the festival’s opening presentation is Enjoy Your Stay, a moving drama directed by Dominik Locher and Honee Alipio. The film follows Luz, a Filipina undocumented worker in Switzerland whose quiet life is upended after seeing her young daughter appear on a television program back home. Determined to reunite with her child after years of sacrifice overseas, Luz embarks on a desperate race against time, confronting impossible choices that test her conscience, her resilience, and the limits of a mother’s love.

The film features Mercedes Cabral in the lead role, supported by a powerhouse ensemble that includes Anna Luna, Hasmine Killip, Irma Adlawan, Donna Cariaga, and Madeleine Nicolas. Ahead of its Philippine premiere, Enjoy Your Stay earned international recognition after debuting at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year.

Festivalgoers can watch the opening film free of charge on Aug. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Red Carpet Cinemas 1 and 2 in Shangri-La Plaza, with admission available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Bringing the festival to a close is Filipiñana, director Rafael Manuel’s feature adaptation of his acclaimed short film. The psychological drama centers on Isabel, a teenage employee of an exclusive country club whose fascination with its influential president gradually uncovers disturbing truths hidden beneath the institution’s polished image. As the mystery unfolds, Isabel discovers that her connection to the club runs far deeper than she ever imagined.

Topbilled by Jorrybell Agoto alongside veteran actor Teroy Guzman, Filipiñana first gained international attention after premiering in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.

The closing screening is scheduled for Aug. 16 at 8:30 p.m. at Red Carpet Cinemas 1 and 2, with tickets priced at ₱350 for regular patrons and ₱250 for students.

Carrying the banner “Cinemalaya 22: Reel Reflections,” this year’s festival embraces stories that mirror the complexities of Filipino life through intimate, character-driven storytelling. By choosing Enjoy Your Stay and Filipiñana to bookend the event, Cinemalaya highlights narratives that explore family, identity, survival, and the enduring strength of women while continuing its tradition of championing bold Filipino filmmaking on the global stage.
