Lawrence “Law” Fajardo’s sociopolitical drama Silenced Nights is set to represent the Philippines on one of the world’s biggest film stages after earning a spot in the Platform section of the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The selection makes it the first Filipino feature to compete in TIFF’s main juried competition since the Platform program was introduced 11 years ago.

The festival’s Platform lineup showcases 12 films from around the world recognized for their bold storytelling and distinctive directorial vision. Apart from the CAD$20,000 award, the winning non-English-language film will automatically qualify for consideration in the Best International Feature Film race at the 99th Academy Awards.

Penned by Troy Espiritu, the film was shot in Happyland, Tondo, and follows an ordinary worker who witnesses the fatal police shooting of a teenage boy. Inspired by the 2017 killing of Kian delos Santos, the drama explores fear, silence, and the consequences of pursuing justice through a cinéma vérité approach.

Executive producer Atty. Joji Alonso described the project as a return to the kind of filmmaking that first inspired her career.

“In recent years, I have immersed myself in commercial filmmaking. The experience has expanded my craft but often left me longing for the kind of narrative that first ignited my passion. Films that challenge, provoke and speak truth to power,” executive producer Atty. Joji Alonso shared. “Silenced Nights marks my return to that realm — a deeply personal, socially grounded film that reconnects me to my roots in Independent Cinema,” she added.

The ensemble cast is led by Nico Antonio, Lotlot de Leon, Ina Feleo, Tanya Gomez, Joel Saracho, Dylan Ray Talon, Simon Ibarra, Mario Magallona, Rom Factolerin, Soliman Cruz, Hector Macaso, Raul Morit, Bombi Plata, Apollo Abraham, DMs Boongaling, Mae Paner, Tess Jamias, Timothy Castillo, Kenken Nuyad, Micko Laurente, Enzo Osorio, Jorrybell Agoto and Aquisha Tombiga. The film carries the tagline, “Where fear prevails, justice is silenced.”

Produced by Ferdy Lapuz and Patricia Sumagui, with Albert Banzon serving as cinematographer, the film is an international collaboration between Quantum Films of the Philippines, France's House on Fire, and House on Fire International of Taiwan. The production also received support from the Film Development Council of the Philippines.

At TIFF, Silenced Nights will compete against 11 other international entries for the Platform Prize, with the jury headed by Argentine filmmaker Pablo Trapero and joined by directors Amma Asante and Sylvia Chang, producer Luc Déry and executive Albert Lee.

Before its world premiere in Toronto, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board gave the film an R-16 rating for its violent scenes, strong language, drug-related content and mature themes involving extrajudicial killings. Following its festival bow, the film is scheduled to open in Philippine cinemas on 16 September.
