The race for this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival is already shaping up to be one of its most star-studded editions.
Organizers have unveiled the first four official entries for the 52nd Metro Manila Film Festival, giving moviegoers an early preview of the films that will headline the country’s biggest annual celebration of local cinema. With San Juan and Mandaluyong serving as host cities, the festival opens with an impressive mix of comedy, drama, fantasy and horror, led by some of the industry’s most celebrated actors and filmmakers.
Comedy fans have plenty to anticipate with The Greatest Showdown, the much-talked-about collaboration that finally brings Vic Sotto and Vice Ganda together on the big screen. Directed by Jun Robles Lana, the film is expected to be one of the festival’s biggest crowd-drawers as two of Philippine entertainment’s most successful comedy icons share top billing for the first time.
The horror genre also gets a major boost through Haunted Carnival, featuring an ensemble led by John Arcilla, Maricel Soriano, James Reid, Julia Barretto and Fyang Smith. Combining veteran award-winning performers with younger box-office favorites, the Regal Entertainment production promises suspense and thrills during the holiday season.
Meanwhile, acclaimed director Zig Dulay returns with Amir, a fantasy drama written by National Artist for Film Ricky Lee and Angeli Atienza. The film stars Dennis Trillo, Glaiza de Castro, Will Ashley and Argus Aspiras, bringing together seasoned performers and rising talents in what is expected to be one of the festival’s most ambitious dramatic offerings.
Completing the first batch is 2nd Miracle in Cell No. 7, headlined by Aga Muhlach. The sequel revisits one of the country’s most beloved family dramas, aiming to deliver another emotionally resonant story for audiences during the Christmas movie season.
